Sticking Up for Your Way of Eating

Father's day is tomorrow…what food is on the docket?
July 4th is coming…what will be at your back yard bar-b-que?
Birthdays, hanging out with friends or just cooking meals for the family. Sticking to the way we eat can sometimes be a battle. People don't mean to be rude or insensitive (I have to believe that), but there are times when we just want to cave under the pressure because it's easier than the conflict or the feeling of exclusion.

I found this helpful article on ways you can "stick up for yourself" and not feel guilty or make the other person feel bad.

My favorite point is #2: Be Excited About The Way You Eat
Don’t apologize or make excuses about your diet. Be excited. Excitement is contagious. When people sense your enthusiasm—about your improved health and/or your discoveries of new foods and recipes that work for you—they will likely be more accepting.

What is your favorite point or do you have another way that you stick to your guns in those tempting or otherwise hard situations?

That's why I like eating at the local buffet. I don't have to explain my choices to anyone and I am solely responsible for what I eat. Except for the chinese buffet…everything in there (that I like)Is not good for my diabetes. Unfortunately it's practically next door to the gym.

I don't really have to explain my diet to my family. They know that my having diabetes means I can't eat certain things, but they were already used to my peculiar eating habits as I never liked much when I was growing up. Thank goodness for Cheerios and pnut butter. And anyway the choice to eat or not is mine ultimately, as I am the one who will pay the price.

I know that always eating the way thats been successful for me - Low carb, high fat, good amount of protein - and good post meal bg readings - are worth avoiding what I consider foods bad for me! When ordering out - :Double vegetables and saying NO to dessert is just my way of life now. I kind of treat it like a food allergy - indulge and have a bad reaction!

it took long while for eve my best friends and family members to realize I wasn't being, as one relative put it, a "carbophobe". Fortunately, now I have become more comfortable with my eating choices and so have they.. What amazes me is when I go to a restaurant and I tell the server that I choose not to eat potatoes or other carb rich foods because I am diabetic and they respond "but, it is gluten free". I just say "no thank you", look away and roll my eyes

It can be astounding how much people DON'T know about things in general. I think they laugh at me when I order my two sides...broccoli and broccoli. LOL

to me its all about the testing. high blood sugar is bad and the testing tells you what to eat and what not to eat.

Those situations are rarely any problem for me. I don't particularly follow any type of strict diet plan so i don't have any problems with the foods at any family functions.
Don't get me wrong. Do I pay attention to what I am eating? Yes. But I'm just not picky about it. I don't count carbs or measure or weigh anything. I've never pointed at an item and said "I can't have that, I'm diabetic." If it's something I really don't want I just pass it by. I do operate on the premise that there is nothing we can't have in moderation.

I like what you are saying about not bringing attention to "I can't eat that". I am the same way, I just by pass the things I should not eat and usually I can make things work out.

In some cases it's the other way around. A family member will be pointing at something I put on my plate and telling me I shouldn't have that.

I'm an out and proud evangelist for fasting and a low carb way of eating.
my weight loss and lipid panels speak for themselves.
I have "converted" many … including my son and daughter in law, now eating keto, and my three grandkids (ages 2-8) all eat low carb.
