I was diagnosed as diabetic today.

Ugh. I've been on blood pressure meds for a few years, and my doctor is conscientious about keeping up with what's going on with my health. I had a full blood work exam a month ago along with an echo cardiogram, and today I enjoyed a nice leisurely ride on the stationary bike stress test machine. Weeee!

I aced all of that, but for the first time ever the A1C test came back high. It was 6.9, so Doctor John told me I'm now officially diabetic and just short of needing medication. In other words, I can still fix this on my own. He's going to administer the test in 90 days to see how the average has changed based on what I do to fix it.

His office called me a couple weeks ago and set today up, letting me know that it was all about the sugar. So my wife and I preemptively went no sugar/low sugar in everything. We've been doing that since, and it really hasn't been hard at all, other than feeling as if I could lie down and drink chocolate from a vat like a college boy with a contraband keg.

During that time I've lost 7 pounds and I really do feel a lot better. I haven't felt this "well" in many years, so no matter what happens, the diet lifestyle is here to stay, grrrr. Now the quest begins in earnest for good sugar free desserts, because I have 28 sweet teeth. It was my daughter's birthday on the 7th, and my wife baked a separate totally sugar-free cake for me so I wouldn't be left out of the happy-smiling-eating. She found some Pillsbury sugar-free icing and cake mix, so it wasn't much trouble for her and it was pretty good. I've discovered that the main difference in that sort of thing versus sugar-foods is that the sugar-free cake tends to seem drier and maybe a touch gritty. Sometimes almost like the pecan sandy cookie-type grittiness. I assume it's a byproduct of being prepackaged. The icing was as good as anything "normal" I've ever had.

It's funny in a nauseous, regretful sort of way how as soon as you're told that sugar is poison for you, every coworker you have seems to decide to bring cookies, cakes, pies and every other kind of no-no to work and leave them sitting around in your direct line-of-sight. And not a box of Little Debbie cakes either…I'm talking luscious stuff right from the doughnut shop and the local bakeries.

And they usually say, "Aren't you even going to try some?" Sugar Yoda then whispers in my ear, "There is no try…there is only eat all of it". So, no thanks, I'll just be miserable. That earns me a weird look, and I die a little more inside, but I live a little longer outside.

Since today has been kind of stressful with my life-changing bad news, I won't get into a whole lot else, but I'm glad to have found the site. I hope I can be of some help to someone, somehow.

Happy day, and the quest for sweet sweet chocolate goes on.

OMG why do diabetics continue toget there sugar fix Those sugar free cakes are probably worsre than eating sugar . You know your a diabetic your only goal is to get you A1C down what are you thinking your crying about not being able to eat the shit that got you sick in the first place . Dude you are sick you cant do the things you used to unless you lower your A1c and maybe eventaully you could . The reason Im telling you this 3 years ago iwas diagnosed Type 2 A1c 9.9 after on a very strick diet no sugar or white flour and no cheating i lost in 3 months i was at a 5.2 and nd no meds since so do wut you gotta do and quit your crying over little Debby

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but I love your attitude about it. Your post just made me chuckle. I love Sugar Yoda....but you will find that the more you look at it as poison (and not just sugar, but carbs in general) you will find a peace in yourself that you can live long and prosper with (sorry, that was a cross over to Trek)

There are lots of us who have been in your shoes and we will be glad to help you in your journey.

Hey Kelsey, welcome to Diabetic Connect, the most supportive community on the planet IMHO. Really glad you found your way to us. I am amazed at how you really got serious about controlling your sugar intake. And so glad you not only experienced a weight loss, but also feel better. Excellent! Also happy to know you have such a supportive partner. As you get to know other people on the site, I think you will appreciate how supportive your wife is even more. I know how tempting the office can be when people bring in snacks to share. I suspect it gets even more intense during December. Eyes on the prize, right? I hope you are getting lots of support. Hi! Iam also T2 and started off on metformin and glimepiride. Within 5 months of eating very low carb - which includes being sugar free, and lots of exercise - I was off the meds! My 2 last A1C tests were at 5.0.
This is my way of life now. Exercise, very low carb…everyday. My goal is to be off meds as long as I possible can.
I understand that the moment you dedicate yourself to adapting a healthy eating plan - here come the goodies!
I tell myself that Iam "allergic" to sweets/carbs! Eating them = bad reaction!
For me - staying completely away from foods that cause blood sugar highs - are just not worth it! Remeber - you don't owe anybody an explanation as to why you are not eating something.
Good Luck and keep your eye on the prize! Continued good blood sugar control!

welcome to the site we are all here to help. It is not just the sugar that you have to watch its the carbs and eating healthy. I seen my Endo today and my Al 5.8. Yeah! I have been off insulin now 43 months I have been a diabetic for 7 years. A lot of us do LCHF and Fasting. Check out DR. Jason Fung. I learned about him 2 years ago when coming to this site and wished I new about him 7 years ago. Read and educate yourself. Going to a Diabetic Educator will tell for you 65 -75 carbs per meal and 2 30 carb snacks. If I still followed the ADA diet I would still be on insulin. I fast 3 days a week a 16/8. quit a few of us has found this works keeping us in the normal BS range. Big Hug Carol

Yes intermittent fasting is also a huge effective tool for managing glucose control! I do 18/6 fasting on an almost daily basis.

you need diabetic educator for a while to teach you about nutrition and to help you stay off meds with your diet good luck i have been diabetic 17 years i take insulin shots twice aday

Welcome to DC…but sorry you have to deal with diabetes. The good news is that as chronic disases go, it is one where we can make lifestyle changes to alter much of the outcome. Eliminating sugar is a first step but, all carbohydrates cause increases in blood sugar, so, you should become carbohydrate aware. Determine how many carb grams you are currently eating per day and if you need to improve, either BG or lose weight, lower the amount of carbohydrate grams in your daily diet. Doing that was a turning point for me in my diabetes control. Reading Dr Richard Bernstein's book "Diabetes Solution" was what opened my eyes to the roll played by carbohydrates in diabetes control. With knowledge and determination and good medical and social support, you can master this! Wishing you well!

small consolation but … it gets better
after 10 years eating low carb I honestly am not tempted
try not. do or do not. there is no try.
changing lifestyle is a lifelong commitment
